What are the programs available at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore? How can I get into IISc?

  1. Bachelor of Science (Research) program
    • Is there any course available at IISc after the 12th Standard?
      • Yes, from 2011 onwards, a 4 year Bachelor of Science (Research) program is offered at IISc. The candidate must have studied Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in +2/12th Standard. In addition, the candidate needs to qualify in one of the national tests – KVPY/  IIT-JEE (Main) or (Advance)/ NEET.
    • What are the subjects offered in the Bachelor of Science (Research) program?
      • There is no specific subject offered in the Bachelor of Science (Research) program. The student must study Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Biology,  Earth and Environmental Science, and Materials. Only in the fourth year a specialized subject will be given to the student based on the interest and performance of the student in the subject.
    • What is the duration for the Bachelor of Science (Research) program?
      • 4 years (8 semesters).
    • I am a NRI candidate. Am I eligible to apply fortheBachelor of Science (Research) program?
      • Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) applicants for the Admissions at the Institute.
        Persons of Indian origin holding non-Indian passports are eligible to apply for admission to the academic programs of IISc provided they hold an Overseas Citizenship of India as per section 7B(1) of the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955.  In addition, they need to satisfy all the eligibility criteria for admission prescribed for Indian citizens.
        Persons of Indian origin holding foreign passports and not holding an Overseas Citizenship of India as per section 7B(1) of the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955 can seek admission through the International Students Admission process.
    • Can I apply for Biology in the undergraduate program?
      • No, there is no specific subject offered in the Bachelor of Science (Research) program. You can take biology as the major subject in the courses.
    • Is there an Aeronautical course available at IISc?
      • No, there is no Aeronautical course available at IISc for 10+2 candidates.
    • Is there any Engineering course offered at IISc for +2 candidates?
      • No, there is no Engineering course offered at IISc for 10+2 candidates.
    • When does the semester start?
      • The Semester starts from the 1st working day of August every year.
    • When will the application form be available for the undergraduate program
      • An Online application will be available from the 1st of February every year till the end of April. There is no offline application form.
    • How does one fill in an online application?
      • Register with your e-mail (preferably gmail) address and a password to start the online application process by creating a new user account.  (New user to register click here). The Email ID used to register cannot be changed later. After registration a verification email will be sent to the registered email account, by confirming the email, one can start filling in the online application.
    • What are the dates in the Calendar of events for admission to the UG program?

  2. Course program (M Tech/ M Des/ M Mgt)
    • What is the selection procedure for admission to the M Tech/M Des/M Mgt programs?
      • selection to M Tech is only through GATE. Selection to M Des is through GATE/CEED followed by a Design Aptitude Test and interview; Selection to M Mgt is through GATE/GMAT/CAT followed by a group discussion and interview.
    • Is there any interview or aptitude test in the selection procedure for admission to the M Tech programs?
      • Yes, the M Tech programs in Electronics System Engg, Climate Science, Computational Science, Earth Science, Electrical Engineering  have aptitude tests and interviews and Nanoscience and Engineering and Communication Networks have only interview, after short-listing based on GATE scores.
    • Is there any interview or aptitude test in the selection procedure for admission to the M Des program?
      • Yes, the M Des program has a Design Aptitude Test and an interview after short-listing based on GATE/CEED scores.
    • Is there any group discussion/interview in the selection procedure for admission to the M Mgt program?
      • Yes, the M Mgt program has a group discussion and interview after short-listing based on GATE/CAT/GMAT scores.
    • Is there non-GATE admission to M Tech/M Des/M Mgt programs?
      • No, there are no non-GATE admissions available for M Tech/ M Des/ M Mgt programs.
    • I am a AMIE degree holder; am I eligible to apply to M Tech/Research programs?
      • If you have a B Sc followed by AMIE degree then you are eligible to apply for M Tech/ Research programs with a valid GATE score.
    • I have a Diploma and I am an AMIE degree holder; am I eligible to apply to M Tech/ Research programs?
      • No, you are not eligible to apply to any of the programs at IISc.
    • What are the criteria for applying to M Tech/ M Des programs?
      • BE/B Tech with minimum of second class with a valid GATE score is the criterion for M Tech/ M Des programs with a valid GATE/CEED.
    • What is the duration of M Tech/M Des/ M Mgt programs?
      • The duration is 2 years (4 semesters).
    • I wish to apply for M Tech and M Des programs. Should I apply through a single application or should I fill in two separate application forms?
      • One application form is sufficient to apply to M Tech and M Des programs; a maximum of 5 preferences can be entered in one form.
    • When does the semester start?
      •      The Semester starts from the 1st working day of August every year.
    • When will the application form be available for Course programs?
      • Online applications will be available from the 1st of February every year till mid March. There is no offline application form.
    • How does one fill in an online application?
      • Register with your e-mail (preferably gmail) address and a password to start the online application process by creating a new user account.  (New user to register click here). The Email ID used to register cannot be changed later.     • What are the streams/disciplines available in the Integrated Ph D program?
      • Integrated Ph D programs in the Biological, Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Sciences are available.
    • I am an M Sc, Biotechnology candidate and am in the 2nd semester, with a B Sc in Microbiology, am I eligible to apply for the Integrated Ph D program?
      • Yes you are eligible to apply for the Integrated Ph D program, but you need to clear the JAM examination.
    • I am a B Sc final year candidate with Physics, Maths & Computer Science, am I eligible to apply for the Integrated Ph D program?
      • If you are interested in the Physical or Mathematical Sciences in the Integrated Ph D program, you are eligible to apply with a valid JAM score.
    • I am a B Tech, Biotechnology candidate can I apply for the Integrated Ph D and Research programs?
      • You are eligible to apply for both the Integrated Ph D and Research programs. With regard to the Integrated Ph D, you need to clear the JAM examination and for the Research program GATE is required.
    • What are the criteria for applying to the Integrated Ph D program?
      • Applicants with First Class B Sc degrees and valid JAM scores are eligible to apply. Applicants with First Class BE/B Tech degrees in Biotechnology and valid JAM scores in the BT paper are eligible to apply. Applicants with First Class BE/B Tech degrees in any Engineering discipline and valid JAM scores in Mathematics or Mathematical Statistics are eligible to apply.
    • What is the duration of the Integrated Ph D programme?
      • 7 years.
    • When does the semester start?
      • The Semester starts from the 1st working day of August every year.
    • When will the application form be available for the  Integrated Ph D program?
      • The Online application will be available from the 1st of February every year till mid March. There is no offline application form.
    • How does one fill in an online application?

  1. Research program (M Tech (Res)/ Ph D
    • What are the criteria and eligible qualifications to apply for the Research-M Tech (Res) program?
      • Applicants with a BE/B Tech/B Sc (Engg) in Engineering (minimum second class) with a valid GATE score are eligible to apply to the Research program. The option of joining only to the M Tech (Res) program must be given at the time of interview to the department interview committee.
    • What are the criteria and eligible qualifications to apply for the  Research-Ph D program?
      • Applicants with M Tech/ ME/ M Des/ M Sc(Engg)/ [MBA or MS or PGDBM or PGDCA (post BE / B Tech)] / M Sc (Tech)/ M Arch/ M Pharm/ MBBS/ M Agri/ M V Sc  degrees are eligible to apply to the Research-Ph D program. There is no need to qualify in any of the national entrance tests. Applicants with BE/B Tech/M Sc degrees and a valid GATE score are eligible to apply to the Research – Ph D program. Applicants with M Sc degree and a valid qualifying certificate from the UGC-NET JRF/ Joint CSIR-UGC NET for JRF/ ICMR JRF/ DBT JRF/ JEST/ NBHM are eligible to apply to the Research – Ph D program. Applicant with MBA degree (other than post BE/B Tech) and a valid GATE/ UGC NET for JRF certificates are eligible to apply to the Research – Ph D program.  Applicants with B Pharm degree and a valid GPAT score are eligible to apply.
    • Can I apply specifically to M Tech (Res) or to Ph D in the online Research form?
      • No, you cannot apply specifically to M Tech (Res) or to Ph D program in the Research online form, there is no such option in the Research form.  You can give your option of joining only to M Tech (Res) or to Ph D program at the time of interview to the department interview committee.
    • I have a M Tech/ ME/ M Des/ M Sc(Engg)/ [MBA or MS or PGDBM or PGDCA (post BE / B Tech)] / M Sc (Tech)/ M Arch/ M Pharm/ MBBS/ M Agri/ M V Sc degree. Should I appear in any of the national entrance test for admission to the Research program?
      • You are eligible to apply for the Research program without appearing in any national entrance test. You will be shortlisted for an interview based on your performance in the Master’s degree indicated above. Weightage will be given to those students who have cleared any of the national entrance tests either in the current year or in  previous years. Also, weightage will be given to those who have publications.
    • I am a M Sc, Biotechnology candidate in the II semester, with a B Sc in Microbiology. Am I eligible to apply for the Integrated Ph D programme?
      • Yes you are eligible, and can apply for the Integrated Ph D programme.
    • I am a BE, ECE candidate with no valid Gate score. Am I eligible for the M Tech (Res) program?
      • All BE/ B Tech/ B Sc (Engg) candidates (in the Engineering disciplines) need to have a valid GATE score for all of the Research programs.
    • I wish to apply for 3 departments. Should I apply through a single application or should I fill in three separate application forms?
      • One application form is sufficient to apply to 3 departments in the Research program.
    • I have  a B Sc degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, and Electronics. Am I eligible to apply for the M Tech (Res) program?
      • No you are not eligible. You need to have a M Sc degree with a valid GATE score to apply for the Research (M Tech (Res)) program.
    • When does the semester start at IISc?
      • The Semester starts from the 1st working day of August every year.
    • What is the duration of the Ph D program?
      • A Minimum of 3 years and a maximum of 6 years.
    • I have a B Tech degree with an MBA degree will I have to write the National Entrance Test for Ph D in Management Studies?
      • Candidates with MBA degrees (post BE/B Tech) do not need to write any National Entrance Tests. You will be called for an interview based on your performance in the qualifying degree.
    • What is the duration of the  M Tech(Res) program?
      • 2 years
    • Can I apply to more than one program?
      • Yes you can apply to more than one program based on your qualifications but must fill the different online forms. There is a link in the Applicant’s interface “Apply for another program”; you can use this link for filling in  another program form.
